How-To: Sew Rope to Make a Bowl

If you’re looking for a fun way to play with rope and a sewing machine why not try these neat sewn bowls? These lovely vessels were created by Melbourne maker, Gemma Patford. I love the random paint splatter treatment that was given to the rope before it was constructed.

Be sure to use a nice soft poly/cotton rope. It will be very difficult to sew through some of the harder plastic or sisal ropes that may be more readily available. I ended up finding some of the diamond braided rope seen above at my local home building supply store.

You have complete control the shape and size of your bowl as you build it. Want your bowl to be more oval shaped? Make sure you start by creating a small oval in the center.

These would make great vessels for active needle working projects. When you’re not working on it, you can corral all your materials in the bowl and it put it off to the side, but keep it in sight so you remember to pick it up again.

This project was created by the talented Gemma Patford who is nice enough to share a DIY video so you can see exactly how she constructs her bowls. Very helpful!

The photo step-by-step tutorial for this particular bowl seen above was a collaboration between Gemma and Geneva from A Pair & A Spare. Head over to check out the full how-to.
