7 Mad Max Props You Can 3D Print Right Now

There are very few things that will fire-up the creative minds of the world like a good movie. This summer’s hit, Mad Max: Fury Road, is proving to be full of inspiration to at least a few Makers out there. Here are seven designs inspired by the movie that you can print right now.

Skull Shifter Handle

After watching this newest installment in the Mad Max franchise, Matt Quest decided his ride needed an upgrade. Quest used modeling software, Maya, to model the shifter knob in the car sported by the film’s main baddy — Immortan Joe. It took Quest about 2-3 hours to model the skull knob. Quest modeled the part in three sections: the skull, the jaw, and the shifter interface. He then used MeshMixer to import the parts and turn them into one solid mesh, after which he printed it using his Felix 3.0 3D printer.

Quest says that the shifter should be able to fit any standard shifter. He suggests going heavy on the infill though, if you intend to use the shifter for daily use. Later this summer, Quest is planning on building his own foundry to melt aluminum cans. Then, he hopes to cast the knob out of aluminum to make a better looking and more permanent part. Quest was kind enough to give back to the community and has posted his design to Thingiverse if you would like to create your own.

Quest of course was not the only person inspired by Fury Road. Thingiverse is beginning to amass quite a collection of Mad Max-inspired content.

Max’s Mask

Max wasn’t very happy about being stuck in this mask, but thanks to Thingiverse user CarryTheWhat, you can print one out yourself and see how well it helps complete your costume.

Max’s Shoulder Pad

An off the shelf leather jacket just won’t cut it for a respectable Mad Max costume. Print this shoulder pad from thingiverse user SeanKFields for a true post apocalyptic look.

Realistic Mad Max Shotgun Prop

Max can’t wander the barren wastelands unarmed of course. Fields helped complete the look by designing and printing Max’s weapon of choice: a double barreled sawed off shotgun. Be careful with this one, it looks real enough that it could get you in trouble.

Bonus: Immortan Joe’s Mask

Some Makers just take things to the next level and make things that astonish us with their skill and craftsmanship. Though you can’t print this one yourself, you might enjoy how well done it is.

RPF user Logan (Logan74K) decided to take on a piece belonging to the movie’s villain: Immortan Joe’s oxygen mask. Logan turned to ZBrush, which is a great choice for organic shapes like those found in the mask. To help ensure the highest quality, Logan had the parts of the mask printed with an SLS printer.

After receiving the prints, Logan made molds of them so he could cast urethane parts for easier replication. The parts were carefully painted to create the final look, a process that Logan documented well on the RPF page. To complete the masks, rubber hoses, coper tubing, and screws were applied — bringing it all together for a perfect look.
