An Animated Glimpse of Diet Coke and Mentos at the Unisphere

Video is a great medium for conveying an experience, but animated GIFs somehow occasionally do so even better. And so today, when I saw the creations that Google Photos automatically made from my collection of photos from World Maker Faire New York this weekend, I knew there was one that I wanted to share with the world.

EepyBird’s Diet Coke and Mentos show has been a fan favorite at Maker Faire for years, a delightful experience that is equal parts science lesson and silly spectacle. Watch it once and you’ll be dropping candies into two litre bottles as soon as you get home.

Last year was the first that the show was given permission to perform at the Unisphere, just outside the Maker Faire New York gates. It’s an iconic spot, built for the 1964-65 Worlds Fair, and standing a massive 120 feet tall. Its size is truly hard to grasp until you stand in person below it.

This year we were once again given permission to do the Unisphere show, and scheduled two events, one each day at 530pm. The stroll from the New York Hall of Science grounds gives you perspective on the size of World Maker Faire New York, and also lets you see some of the surroundings, including the Arthur Ashe tennis stadium with its new roof.

Be sure to sit up front at an EepyBird presentation if you get an opportunity — and bring a raincoat and goggles if you do. You’ll get soaked.
