Crude oil and gasoline prices are near an all-time high. But don’t despair. One scientist has found an alternative source of energy: pig manure. Yuanhui Zhang, an agricultural engineering professor at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, has succeeded in turning small batches of hog waste into oil. Seems like people waste could work too. Link.

…too bad it seems to have already been invented, and is in major testing phase. As seen in Discover, Scientific American, MIT Review and many others, the waste to crude process created by CWD Inc. sounds like the one mentioned in the article, right down to the supposed advantages: “There is no need for the addition of a catalyst, […] process does not require predrying of the manure.” CWD’s process addresses all of these and is already rendering other waste products on a medium/large scale at ~85% efficiency (according to CWD). CWD currently has at least two medium to large scale working test facilities in the US, and they claim to be able to process any sort of waste from tires to sewage with the process.

They are the company mentioned in Discover magazine and the creators this process. Fascinating stuff, and if useful on a large scale it becomes a lot more than just fascinating, World Changing even.

Ah, thanks for the link, that’s the company I was talking about; for some reason I thought it was CWD instead of CWT… Wooops!
