Preston Gralla, author of Windows XP Hacks, 2E (as well as the previous edition) and Windows Vista in a Nutshell, has some great news for all you early Vista adopters out there:

Finally, the long, five-year wait is over–Windows Vista is here. But you won’t have to wait five years if you want to start hacking it; you can start right now. Check out these six top tips for hacking Windows Vista.

Here are the six hacks in his article:

  1. Hack the Windows Explorer Shortcut Menu
  2. Hack Windows Vista Screensavers
  3. Hack the Elevated Command Prompt
  4. Hack Aero’s Glass Borders
  5. Hack System Restore
  6. Hack Vista’s Blinking Cursor

How about you? Got any early hacks to share? We’d love to hear them. Just use the “Suggest a Hack” form in the sidebar. Your hack might get featured on this site or just might end up in Preston’s next Hacks book…

Oh, what an evil thrill it gave me to spoof the site using my PII366/128MB RAM/6GB HDD/Win 98SE laptop. Hell, I may have to buy a new battery and take it out for a spin!
(Note to rabid linux-on-obsolete-tech evangelists or anyone still set to automatic flame upon hearing Windows 98: the ‘puter runs Win98SE because, like Arthur Dent’s television, it can’t handle anything more exciting, and while I like reading Make and the Hacks books, and am even somewhat successful in emulating the simpler feats, getting linux onto a balk old laptop isn’t simple. I’ve tried. Not that I won’t try again–god knows I’d love to get a few more horsepower out of this thing.)
