While MAKE hosted its first 3D printer meetup in Sebastopol last week, across town at Analy High School Project Make unveiled the Analy Community Makerspace, a new community makerspace at Analy High School. The facility is the new home for Project MAKE, a program aimed at reinventing the shop class with new tools for a new generation of makers and tinkers. Arduino was conceived as an open source microcontroller for artists, designers, and others who aren’t necessarily techie/programmer types. Of course, all sorts of makers have flocked to this technology because of its versatility. But in spite of its relative ease of use, there’s still a barrier to entry for new users. Like kids. For that reason, BirdBrain Technologies’ Hummingbird looks promising. They call it “pre-Arduino.”

Santa Rosa Engineering Class Visits MAKE

Last week, students from Santa Rosa Junior College’s Introduction to Engineering Profession class stopped by MAKE’s lab. Many of the students are unsure of which type of engineering they’d like to go into in the future and the class allows them to get their feet wet in multiple disciplines, as well as go on a few awesome field trips. Although many engineering college curriculums are lacking in the hands-on department, we think that being able to make things is an extremely important skill for high school and college students alike.

We enjoy having guests here at MAKE HQ and recently we had an opportunity to show some amazing people around. Eight members of the IDEO team visited the MAKE office and lab to share ideas, plan future collaboration, and have fun. IDEO is a famous design consultancy based in Palo Alto with offices in San Francisco and around the world.
