Artist Sarah Symes appears to have bridged the gap between quilting and abstract painting in these stunning textile compositions.

Inspired by the people and places that she encounters, Symes uses textiles to express her internal experience of the world.

Each piece begins as a sketched idea. I select quality fabrics and carefully pre-wash and hand dye them as needed. The fabric is then cut into shapes and stitched together using a sewing machine. It’s an improvised process, like painting or collage, enabling the gradual build up of color and texture. The finished piece is stretched over a wooden frame and completed with a hanging wire.

It’s great to see fabric and thread used in a way that’s so expressive!
