This state-of-the-art example of 3D projection mapping has been making the rounds on Facebook. This projection show was done in Kharkov, Ukraine, on the Kharkiv Regional Administration’s building (on 8/24/10), in honor of the city’s birthday and Independence Day.
Clever idea over at DIYPhotography.net: Wind outdoor lights around a wire wreathe frame, using the lights’ built-in-clips to secure them in place. The resulting “glamor” video lighting looks pretty good, as you can see. [Thanks, Udi!]
We’ve posted about Phillips’ Ambilight (Wikipedia) real-time multicolor display backlighting system, and various DIY versions thereof, before (see below). If you’re not familiar with the idea, watch a few seconds of the embedded video, as it’s hard to appreciate the effect from still images. If you believe the hype, this kind of dynamic backlighting improves viewing by making it more “immersive” and reducing “backlight bleed.” In any case, it’s certainly cool-looking.
Following on the heels of our Working with ABS piece, here’s a Make: Project that furthers your working with ABS (assembling via rivets) and includes use of translucent polycarbonate sheeting to create a cool dodecahedron lamp.
Here’s a project that’s definitely worth the trip to the hardware store. David from Cheltenham Road wrote this affordable decorative luminaries tutorial for Mod Podge Rocks, showing how easy it is to turn metal plates into mood lighting. They definitely look much nicer (and sturdier) than the usual paper bag!
My friend, and HacDC cohort, Erica Kane, put together this wonderful set of automated LED stairs together after seeing this post on MAKE. It is programmable to any user-defined light intervals and sequences.
Thanks to Flickr user Matt Jones for hipping me to Udi Tirosh’s recent homemade softbox design contest over on DIYPhotography.net. For those, like myself, who are unsure, a “softbox” or “soft box” is simply a diffuse lighting source for taking photos, commonly with a reflective interior and one or more diffusing panels that scatter the light and help prevent it from casting harsh shadows. The contest had seventy submissions, reportedly, and here you can read about Udi’s top 24.
