Today’s Maker Camp is another twofer. Starting at 11am PDT, we’re going to talk about vacuum forming, a process in which a sheet of warmed thermoplastic is shaped by placing it in a mold and applying suction. Today, maker Adam Harris will show us the useful technique using a humble jar of peanut butter. But wait! There’s more. After the morning hangout we’re going to check in with Raspberry Pi guru and MAKE contributing editor Matt Richardson at 1pm EST for a special Pi workshop.

Maker Camp: “Not on Tour” With Imogen Heap & Zoë Keating

We’ve got a real treat for Maker Camp’s field trip Friday today at 11am PST. We get to hang out with two of our favorite musicians as they step out of their studios to share their thoughts and insights on making music. Imogen Heap, a Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and composer will show us how she crafts and sculpts sounds. Zoë Keating lays down her cello to talk to campers.

Maker Camp Bangs a Drum Today

Maker Camp will make some noise today as we meet the taiko drummers of Wadaiko Newark who will show us how to make a taiko drum using a classic oak barrel design, construction-site salvaged PVC, or a water barrel. We’ll be joined by Sue Eustice, founding Member of Wadaiko Newark. Wadaiko Newark is a Taiko group formed in cooperation with the Newark Unified School District and serving the people in Alameda County in California.

Today Maker Camp continues with the DIY Music theme as we meet meet three artists who building their own unusual instruments and coax beautiful sounds from them. Starting at 11am PST we’ll hangout with Walter Kitundu who makes nature-powered, hand-built record players; Krys Bobrowski, creator of kelp horns, an instrument she made by drying seaweed so that she could play it with her French Horn mouthpiece; and Zeke Leonard, maker of cigar box guitars.
