Thanks to a commenter on last weekโs Now Thatโs A Knife post for pointing out that Jeremy Hansonโs Spudgun Technology Center has a custom machine for rifling PVC pipe to make more accurate barrels for potato cannon. They sell several varieties of rifled PVC (including clear) in assorted lengths. The way I hear it, the rifling machine was first designed and build by STC founder Ed Goldmann. [Thanks, Bryce Bell!]

Iโm slightly confused by my own reaction to this concept from Korean designer Sungho Lee: Intuitively, I love it! Super cool! How clever! I donโt know about you, but Iโm so used to the paradigm established by old-style incandescent bulbs that when one of my CFLโs โblows out,โ it doesnโt even occur to me that I might be able to repair it in the garage. Or at least, it didnโt until I saw this page from Pavel Ruzicka, which does a good job of explaining the general principles of operation of CFL lamps and gives great details about their most common failure modes.
