Gorillapods are pretty versatile tripods.You can find them for between $20-$50 depending on the size or build one for a few dollars in parts. Wanna know what’s even cooler than a Gorillapod? A Gorillapod on wheels. Yep, just bolt on some inline skate wheels and your fancy new tripod is now a hybrid tripod dolly.
Here at Make: Labs we’re all about documenting the testing and building of projects. Up until recently, we interns had direct access to a small digital “point and shoot” style camera that we would use for close up detailed shots and to capture images of life in the lab.
ITP students Matt Tennie and Lily Szjanberg designed and built a device depicting Michael Jackson with an exaggeratedly large, sparkly hand hanging from the ceiling at their school. Whenever someone gives MJ a high five, a switch is triggered, sending serial data to a Processing sketch. The sketch then tells a webcam to snap a picture, which is uploaded directly to a flickr account.

Back in June, I was excited about the idea of so-called “light field” photography – a digital raster process that captures not only intensity and color for each pixel, but also the direction of inbound light. The upshot? So-called “light field” cameras actually record a vector field for each image that allows ray-tracing routines in software to produce images of the scene arbitrarily focused at any depth, including infinite.
Kim Keever’s elaborate method produces remarkable results. This, from a statement at Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery: “Kim Keever’s large-scale photographs are created by meticulously constructing miniature topographies in a 200-gallon tank, which is then filled with water.”
