Infrared light may be invisible to the human eye – but it’s usefulness in the world of electronics is easy to see. IR emitters & detectors can be used in a variety of different ways – most of us use them for wireless communication everyday.
In support of the latest issue of MAKE, Volume 28, MAKE contributor Stefan Jones sent me a link to this PDF of a booklet from the 1950s on model airplane building. It was put out by Sterling Models and reprinted from Flying Models Magazine.
In the early aughts, I ran a popular and well-regarded tabletop wargame modeling and converting site called 40K Konversions. Julian Khor, a Senior Lead Designer at Ubisoft Singapore, has a series of inspiring videos (99 in all) on sculpting superheroes, action figures, and modeling the human form in general (virtual 3D modeling tuts, too). The above video is part one of a 35-part series on sculpting a Hulk-y “action figure.”
Steve is probably an acquired taste and the pacing of his videos (which would make a turtle shout: “Hurry up!”) and the no-production production can be maddening (faster-forwarding is a huge help here), but his chops as a modeler are undeniable and the knowledge, tips, and tricks you acquire in sticking with him are invaluable.
We’ve been enjoying all of our themes and Skill Builder series this year, but many of us are particularly excited by this month: Hobby How-Tos. All of us being kids at heart, we still have a soft spot for things like scale modeling, rocketry, tabletop gaming, Legos, R/C vehicles, model railroading, miniatures and action figure modding, cosplay, papercraft, you name it.
