Weekend Projects is back! This year we’ll be making more with LEDs (but of course!), lasers, and solar power; we’ll be building bots, rovers, and bending circuits, among other projects. And for our first build – Game Show Buttons – we’ll be using the versatile and legendary 555 timer.

During the course of Weekend Projects there were several projects that I was personally excited about, to both tinker with and write about. But there was one obvious crowd favorite among the fifteen beginner projects we built. While there was no competition per se, the Light Theremin was the obvious winner.
Going back through my Weekend Projects notes, I realized I never got around to properly thanking Mike and his daughter Jessica who brought their patriotic tri-color mod of the Floating Glow Display to World Maker Faire in September.
It’s almost as if any Make:Project with “mod” in it’s name is begging to be, well, modded! A shining example of this is John Moseley’s mod of the Luna Mod Looper – dare I say his hack is cute!
Want to send secret messages over long distance but are wary of your communiqué being intercepted? After all transmissions can be listened to with the right equipment, and you don’t want to run entire spools of wire to say, “Hello world.” I know, how about a Simple Laser Communicator!
Weekend Projects reader R. Lee writes in with his perfboard version of the Luna Mod Looper, one of many mods now out there in the wild. Not that I don’t appreciate the carpentry in Brian McNamara’s original project, but personally, this “all-guts-exposed” approach is my favorite style of making.
