Inspired by the article I finally hooked an old webcam up to one of my microscopes, didn't even need to remove the lens and just held it in place by hand. Worked great, you can see two pictures taken with it on my blog: http://mechanicalphilosopher.blogspot.com/2005/05/microphotography.html
Next step is to make an adapter which will mount it so I have both hands free.
