this was a great big version of those little charts we used to make in elementary school, and I loved it! I'll have to find more of these and do them more often!
Took me half an hour. I feel smart! Though I agree, I'm sure WAY more than 2% of people could figure this out nowadays!Posted by bethilyssa on September 27, 2009 at 20:59:49 Pacific Time

Took two attempts (new sheet of paper) and about a half hour.
The order (color) of the houses falls out right away and the rest is just grunt work. Still, a good puzzle (any puzzle I can solve is a good one).

Hope to see more of these, lots of fun. It also occurs to me I may need some more practise as this took more than an hour to complete with the help of my girlfriend. I am impressed at those who completed it so quickly.Posted by elektrix on May 11, 2009 at 13:02:18 Pacific Time
- order of the houses from left to right...

One thing the solution did not provide was the order of the houses from left to right.
This is what I got (in order from left to right):
Norwegian, Dane, Brit, German, Swede
Is that what other people found?Posted by nireves on May 08, 2009 at 08:17:09 Pacific Time

Ah, OK....
I see that the solution lists the houses in order (top to bottom), with the first house listed being the left-most house and the last house listed being the right-most house.
Sorry 'bout that....

My 11 year old daughter and I, working together, took two evenings to solve this puzzle. I guess that puts us on the very low end of the top 2% or possibly the 2% doubles to 4% because of our collaboration pushing us out of the winners circle...
Perhaps we'll try again separately next issue!Posted by MrJetson on April 01, 2009 at 20:19:32 Pacific Time

If the houses are arranged in a circle, with one house in the center, then there will appear to be a "leftmost house" (if you're standing far enough). Since there is more than one solution to this arrangement, I figured the houses must be in a straight line. I don't know why I have to make things more complicated than they should be.Posted by Optimistic2007 on March 29, 2009 at 22:18:59 Pacific Time

it should state that the houses aren't arranged in a circle. C'mon, you can figure out that space and time are curved but for for some reason a street can't be?Posted by jclagg on March 06, 2009 at 17:05:49 Pacific Time

Since one clue refers to "the leftmost house", it's clear they aren't in a circle. And since another clue says "looking from the front", it's implied that the houses all face in the same direction.Posted by CLandau on March 21, 2009 at 14:32:29 Pacific Time

Did it in about an hour and used a chart with all the options and eliminated those that were false. Worked pretty well, but it was fun.Posted by Putter3 on March 04, 2009 at 08:21:37 Pacific Time

only 2% of the population may have been able to solve this 75 years ago but I imagine the percentage is much higher in 2009.Posted by controlroom on February 28, 2009 at 07:32:51 Pacific Time
