Hand built Hood hinges

Hotrodder writes – “The members on our hotrodding forum have been very impressed by the metalshaping skills of Pakistani “denters”. Complex automotive body panels and pieces are shaped by hand, or with primitive tools. The pics of welding in open-toed sandals with no protection are very cool. With the assistance of a Pakistani doctor/businessman, these metalshapers are selling inexpensive hand-formed body parts to enthusiasts in Western automotive forums. Initially focusing on 4×4 body panels, they are now gearing up to form complete steel hot rod bodies at half the current market price. More info here and here. Very interesting, from both a cross-cultural and lowbuck-maker perspective.”Link.

In the UK (and presumably elsewhere) the word ‘Paki’ is considered highly racially offensive…

Interesting. I guess, though, everything is offensive to someone, somewhere in the world…

Damned fine craftsmen over there. In the Kashmir region they make near perfect functional copies of pretty much any firearm you want. The only problems they have is with the barrels, as there is no “simple” way to make a good barrel with rifling.

Billions worth of counterfeit goods come from China and the far east every year. They are so good that some are sold as parts for aircraft without anyone being able to tell the difference! DVDs, PCs, dodgy operating systems at the high tech end, all the way down to simple clones of metal brackets, and all with various degrees of legality.

Thanks Andy and Phillip. Seems like a folksy abbreviation in the US and Australia, but offensive in the UK. Good to know. More info here.

We’ve noticed similar burgeoning DIY automotive cultures in Iran.
