Firefox 2.0 – 3 nice new things

I really tweak out Firefox to get stuff done and installing alpha/beta/new stuff doesn’t usually scare me away – so here’s a super-quick review of Firefox 2.0 (out today) and three cool new features.

    Don’t forget the add-ons:

    Stuff ready for 2.0

Web Developer 1.0.2 – lots of developer mojo. Turn off various CSS styles, view javascript errors, validate, resize, show hidden fields/forms/etc. Great tool.

Plain Text Links 0.3 – right click/center click to open a typed link (without proper a href). No need to highlight the link in version 0.3.

You know, I’m torn. I love Firefox and all its features, and I would never run a machine without a copy handy. But it’s just too slow.

Opera has a lot of great features of its own, and no matter how much you tweak Firefox’s performance settings, Opera is hands-down the faster alternative. That speed can really add up, and psychologically, as much as people like us live on the Web, it’s just huge. So I’m sticking with Opera for now, after having finally switched after a long time with Firefox.

One more I noticed – you can install search engines by browsing to particular websites. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/ and note how the downward-facing arrow next to the Google icon (or whatever search engine you’re using in the search box) turns blue. Click to install the search thing for wikipedia.

Peterkirn – it’s much faster now. Give it a second chance.

hrrrm . . flock has had all these features, in addition built in flickr + photobucket photobar, del.icio.us favourites management, wp/mt blog posting, etc etc for months

perhaps it ain’t as streamlined, but its just _really_ nice to use . . fiefox extentions work also.

unrelated but cool: this is posted usin free boeing wifi enroute to singapore at 37000 ft :D

OSX has a built-in spellchecker that’s been there forever and works anywhere you’re typing in a Cocoa text area. Edit -> Spelling -> Check Spelling (as you type).

So, yawn on that one (for mac users), but the others are nice.
