Modern pins DONT need sharpening, straightening or cleaned – they are plated. Old pins (say pre1940) yes were not plated and dulled and could tarnish. The plating on modern pins keeps them clean, sharp and slick. All this will do it scrape up your plating and cause rust or dirt to get into the scratches. IN other words it will cause wha you think you are trying to prevent. DO NOT DO THIS! DONT USE EMERY EITHER, same problem.
