William Grill needed a better view of his worktable for prototyping. He was using a three-times lighted lens mounted on his workbench, but it wasn’t enough for working on small gadgets. So he created a gadget for gadget prototyping — a monitor that can display his work at 12-times scale on his PC. The gadget begins with an inexpensive color security camera and lens. “It’s amazing what detail you can see when you view your solder surface mounted parts at 7-, 10- or even 15-times,†he says.

I guess I’m dating myself a little bit here, but when I read the headline the first thing I thought was, “Great! Someone brought Amiga back, and it has a good screen magnification tool!”
Wow, I feel old.
Wow! It’s complicated, though!
I’d love to do this with my $250 digital camera (killer macro feature & live video output) but my wife wouldn’t allow it.
There are so many cheap digital cameras, I wonder if there’s one that would make a great starting point for this? Normally, 5X macro is plenty helpful but more is better.
