Houston Mini Maker Faire: Custom Minifigs, Singing Sashimi, and More

The first ever Houston Mini Maker Faire is coming right up on Saturday, January 19th, at the Stafford Centre, and it’s shaping up to be a fun show. Over on their site, they have maker profiles of several of the makers who will be there sharing what they make, including Jared Burks, internationally recognized maker of custom Lego minifigs (pictured above). Singing the praises of making will be Richard Carter and John Schroeter’s Sashimi Tabernacle Choir, the infamous art car covered in 250 synchronized singing aquatic creatures (pictured below).

Other makers include Nerf gun modder Justin “JP” Roth of the Houston-Area Nerfers Group, glass-encapsulated miniatures maker Burton Reckles, e-textiles designer and creator Courtney Kilgard, young maker extraordinaire Ian, and R/C submarine makers SubRon5.

The call for makers is still open, so if you’d like to join the fun of showing off what you make, fill out an application today. And for folks interested in presenting or volunteering, there is an informational meeting on Tuesday, January 8th, in the main conference room at the Children’s Museum of Houston. You can RSVP on the Facebook event page.

I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.
