I don’t remember how young I was when my dad taught me to solder, but it’s a skill that I’ve used ever since. There’s just something about melting metal with a hot iron that gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. Soldering is a skill that I try to pass along whenever possible, whether it’s helping out in the Learn to Solder Tent at Maker Faire, or teaching my friend how to solder XLR connectors in his music studio. If you have any interest in making, the ability to solder is something that you’ll likely need at some point.

If you’re looking to learn to solder or perhaps brush up on your skills, consider checking out our Getting Started with Soldering Kit available in the Maker Shed. This comprehensive kit comes with a variable temperature 40 watt soldering iron, replacement tip set, picks & scrapers, side snips, solder wick, a desoldering pump, helping hands, solder, 5 Learn to Solder Badges, a 555 timer kit, and our Learn to Solder print and PDF books. In short, it’s just about everything you need to get soldering all in one box.

As part of our New Skill in the New Year celebration, you can save 10% on this and any other kit in our Getting Started category by using the code NEWYEAR upon checkout. Don’t miss this opportunity, the sale ends at midnight PST 1/15/2013.

I am the Evangelist for the Maker Shed. It seems that there is no limit to my making interests. I’m a tinkerer at heart and have a passion for solving problems and figuring out how things work. When not working for Make I can be found falling off my unicycle, running in adverse weather conditions, skiing down the nearest hill, restoring vintage motorcycles, or working on my car.
