CDs to Restrict Copying of Songs

Images-47
Another story on music companies using SunnComm’s technology to “rein in copying by the everyday music fan” (EMI and Sony BMG executive). If you have a Mac you don’t need to worry about this, they only do this to Windows users- if you’re on Windows just hold down the Shift key before you insert one of these new CDs. So far I’ve seen a Velvet Revolver CD and a Dave Mattews CD do this, shift key easily defeats them. Link.

  1. Pretty unbelievable stuff. These guys actually install drivers on your PC, without your permission, with the express purpose of crippling it (i.e. making it unable to digitally extract audio from certain CDs). That has got to be illegal somehow…

Anyway, I didn’t want to have to remember to hold Shift all the time, so I disabled Windows’ Autorun feature in the registry. This page shows you a few ways to do that:

  2. add the new foo fighters CD to the list, how lame, i couldn’t even listen to my new cd at work. But then it was videolan to the rescue! god i love that program… Was planning on just downloading a good quality rip anyways to listen to at home.. but now im goona need burn it back just to listen to it at work. I’m glad they finally put an end to this whole “piracy” thing…
