HOW TO make Digital Black and White photos…

05-25-00106 Rj Bwa Great how to…I still enjoy the aesthetic of black and white a great deal, and of course have tried to get the “look” I like in digital as well. Thanks to a lot of experimentation, some reading up, and tips from people who are a lot better at it than I am, I’m finally starting to see the kinds of results I wanted. In particular, thanks to Jim Fuglestad, aka Shutter at DPReview, who thought up the “dodge and soft light” technique described in this essay. Link.

Picasa is a free product to manipulate digital photos. It is a product from Google, and has a ton of features for changing contrast, adding fill light, etc. It also lets you fade out color, reduce the “temperature” of color photos and has a literal ton of effects.

To my knowledge, it doesn’t allow any dodging and burning, as with traditional darkrooms, but you might be able to cheat your way to obtaining the B&W pics that you want in just a few seconds.

That it’s free is the best part. To get it go to http://www.picasa.com.
