HOW TO make DVD Panoramas

Turu Rip your DVDs, save out some bitmaps, and stitch ’em together with some free software. Instant movietastic panorama! Just use the PT GUI — which happens to be a GUI for Panorama Tools. For info on Panorama Tools, just visit PTFAQ.org. Then head over to PTGUI.com to download the tools, and be sure to check out the site’s tutorial for how-to examples. Link. The Jonny Quest ones are rad.

Great link to great software, but it’s _not_ free. It’s $60 which is pretty dear for a single purpose package (although it does seem like an incredibly good product).

I do find articles like this annoying: they suck you in with the promise of free software, but are patently just adverts.

So, couldn’t you just do the same thing with autostitch and a few carefully selected frame grabs, for free?

Yes, I guess you could do this with free tools.

For instance, take this slow pan of the DC mall, play it with VLC, take snapshots a few times as it pans, convert the PNG snapshots to JPG with ImageMagick, then feed the series of JPGs to AutoStitch, and voila. Now that wasn’t hard, was it?
