Randofo writes – “Some time ago my girlfriend asked me if I would make her one of those telephone microphones like the kind that all of those hipster bands have. So, I of course told her I would. Much time passed… and then I made this. This is designed to work with the old-style handsets with the carbon mics inside (see picture). It probably won’t work with most newer handsets.”Link.

  1. If you can contact me I would be obliged as I have a few questions. I’ve never worked in that industry but my electronics knowledge is fair to good. I worked in Plessey Radar’s test department for almost twenty years. I want to rig up a headset and microphone and I want to know the best way of doing it. If you are in the UK I can ring you but overseas gets a bit pricey.

I’ve got a headset but it may be the wrong sort. The microphone us unlikely to be carbon granules, but may be crystal or some other more modern type. The DC resistance is 2k ohms one way and 1k ohms in the opposite polarity

PS By the way, I’m 86 and a bit hard of hearing.
