VeloAce – Open source Palm based bike computer

Here’s an open source bike computer using an old Palm…

Bike Computer System for Palm OS. Provides detailed data views, logging to database, trip data estimation, trainer with Top 10 laps, graphical speedometer. Supports km/h and mph units. The wheel sensor is simply connected over RS232 or even IrDA. VeloAce – Link.

  1. What exactly is this wheel sensor (listed in the project) and where can I lay my hands on one?

  2. I don’t know about this project, but if it is the same as commercial cycle computers then it will be a reed switch attached to one of the forks and a magnet attached to the spokes. You can find them in most electronics shops.

  3. I believe that it’s a custom made sensor. From what I can tell it uses some sort of mechanical switch to work. I think I might have to make one a bit better with a hall effect device. Solid State FTW!
