Radio control switch from junk

This is a great way to recycle those old cordless phones into something really useful and in only 5 relatively easy steps.

Here we are going to make a simple radio controlled device using supplies from your local dumpster. This project should cost less than a dollar to make. If you spend more than a dollar on this project, you need to dig more.

I know someone who got suspended from school, and had police raid his bedroom, for taking a similar device to show-and-tell. Apparently the ability to turn something on from a distance was a threat. And…this was in the early 90’s.

I like the idea and I hope to use it soon in my projects. Note that you can find these phones at GoodWill or your local thrift store for $1 readily.

What I do not like is the author saying “You can steal them from radioshack or your favorite electronics store.” I am hoping that was metaphorical and the intention was that the price is so low it’s ‘like’ stealing. If not, then I am disturbed. Come on makers – in 2008 we have an almost endless supply of low cost or throwout electronics to scavenge. Do we really need to resort to stealing cheap parts? I think we’re all better than that.

Sorry – I’m probably overreacting. I really did like the post and I hope I did not offend if I misunderstood.

I agree with the first commenter – make this now, and DHS will be knocking down your door – did I say “knock”? I meant “blow open” and “raid”.
