High-pitched nuisance device

Quoth the Raven:

This is a little device that I designed for the simple purpose of being discreetly annoying. It waits for a predetermined amount of time, and then it starts emitting high-pitched beeps. I have programmed mine to take advantage of an interesting property of sound. That is, in general most people above the age of 25-30 can’t hear very high-pitched tones (say, 17 KHz for instance). This means if you were to (hypothetically of course) place it in a classroom, it would start bugging the heck out of the students while the teacher/professor will (most likely) be completely unaware of the source of the disturbance.

  1. They have devices like this around shops to stop kids from hanging around outside over here in the UK – I’m 35 and I can hear them, I dont think I’m alone – Id like to see a real study on who and who can’t hear these things!

  2. Sorry, that would be “an interesting property of old people”, or possibly “an interesting property of young people”, but not “an interesting property of sound.” It is not a property of sound…Maybe you could be considered right in an extremely loose, utterly technical, “dictionary definition of property” sort of way, but not in an “I really thought about what I wanted to say (either before or after writing… it doesn’t matter! That’s the great thing about writing versus speaking!) and have presented it in the most logical way” sort of way.

Also, it would be nice if you had put in a disclaimer that you did not come up with this idea of using these frequencies to annoy young people. Someone else came up with that idea and that product has been making the media circuits for some time. I’m just saying.
