You’ve probably heard of hand embroidery, well here is a hand embroidered hand, by artist David Cata, who embroiders portraits of people who have personally impacted his life onto his own body in a series of works called “Under the Skin.”
“Under the Skin” is an autobiographical diary in which my body is support. On it I write the story of my life. By actual sewn performed on the palm of my hand, picture the faces of all those people who, somehow, have marked me throughout my life, family, friends, couples, teachers … Their lives are interwoven with mine to build my story, a story that ends when I run out of leaves to write about.
Cata also created a fascinating video performance of the piece, in which he pulls an embroidered portrait out of his hand to reveal the marks that these embroidered images leave on his skin.
