In this, the age of the selfie, sharing one’s own likeness is pretty standard. That said, this gorgeous cross-stitch self-portrait—all 40,400 stitches of it—from quilter and needlework artist Completely Cauchy takes the practice to a glorious new level!
Some data? I did this like everyone else does: one stitch at a time. At 20 st/in, amounting to 10" square…that’s 40,400 stitches. Each one was meaningful, even during Operation Blackify to achieve the chiaroscuro. During this winter break from RealJob, I made this my full-time pursuit—at least 8 hours a day most days. It took 25 days.
I love the rich use of color and texture in this portrait, and the details are absolutely stunning. Just looking at the close-up shots makes my hands ache in sympathy! (And, for those of you who’re wondering, there is a photo of the back, and it’s beautiful too.)
