Form meets function with this easy way to turn any simple box into an eye-catching metallic chevron container.
My best friend is getting married, and I am throwing her bridal shower this weekend. One element of the shower I wanted to have is a wish box: a place friends can write down a supportive wish for the couple-to-be and place it in the box to be read later. The wedding is such a special and celebratory day, but marriage lasts a lifetime, and it is nice to have those well-wishes in a place you can re-read them in times of need. I wanted the box to be in the modern aesthetic of the wedding, so went with the chevron pattern, and chose the platinum silver to match the bride’s ring. This would also be a great addition to the living room or a lovely way to store supplies and class up an office.
Materials
Paper mache rectangle box
Large paint brush
Small, detail paint brush
Pencil
Ruler
White acrylic paint
Directions
Step 1: Take the lid of your box and paint a thin even coat of white paint along the top and sides, leaving the inside as-is.
Step 2: When the lid is complete, set it aside to dry, and paint the box sides in an even, thin coat. Allow to dry and add a second coat if need be.
Step 3: When the paint is fully dry, take the box lid and make a tiny pencil mark on the center of one short side of the rectangle.
Step 4: Measure up the side of the lid 2 inches and make a tiny pencil mark.
Step 5: Connect the two marks with a ruler and trace a straight line lightly with your pencil.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side.
Step 7: Place your ruler on your first line and trace a line from the side down to the center, and do the same on the other side having the two lines meet to create a second chevron line.
Step 8: Continue this until the lid is filled with the chevron pattern, filling in the corners as well.
Step 9: Continue the lines onto the side of the box with your ruler and pencil.
Step 10: With the lid on the box, continue the pattern onto the four sides of the box in the same way.
Step 11: Put some of your paint into a paint dish and begin painting your chevron lines. *If you want perfectly straight lines, you’ll want to add painter’s tape in between each line. I wanted a structured freehand, which is a nice balance. Paint the lid and box and allow to dry. Add a second coat if necessary and then use your box as you want!
Mine will be a wish box at an upcoming bridal shower for my best girlfriend, but I could see using this to store supplies or trinkets in my home.
