Libs Elliott’s Quilts Designed by Code

Going all the way back to the simple binary coding of warp and weft or knit and purl, crafting has always used coding in its design. These quilts designed by Libs Elliott after collaborating with Joshua Davis using a programming language called Processing are an extraordinary addition to the symbiotic relationship between crafting and code.

I have always been drawn to the idea of taking a traditional and tactile art, like quilting, and marrying it with modern technology. Which is why I work from digital to analogue – the quick, random gratification of generative art combined with the intentional, slow-craft of building a quilt.

I play with various colour palettes, use simple geometric shapes and alter variables in the code to generate random compositions. The combinations are endless and addictive. When the digital results are so sexy that I want to wrap myself in them, I make them into quilts and textiles.
