Nathan Vincent’s Manly Doilies

I love the history and look of traditional handicrafts, and I really love it when someone uses those techniques to turn our assumptions on their heads. Artist Nathan Vincent has made an amazing series of doilies that makes me laugh with delight as I look closer at the beautifully realized details. Each piece enshrines a classic image of masculinity (the Superman ‘S,’ the John Deere logo, a saw, a wrench) within the confines of a frilly piece of lace–perfect.
