Pop Lyrics in Handwoven Carpets

heartstrings-1

Eastern and Western culture come together in heartstrings, a series of handwoven carpets by artist Selma Alaçam. As a Germany-based artist who is the daughter of a Turkish father and a German mother, this work poetically explores the artist’s personal identity by literally weaving together traditional textiles from her Turkish heritage with pieces of text taken from pop songs that have come out of German and Western culture. It’s stunning to see how the traditional craft processes used in this work create such a powerful juxtaposition with the contemporary pop culture that it depicts.
