Over 800 participants took part in the finale of a weeklong arts event in September in NYC called Morningside Lights. The event concluded with a nighttime procession through a public park in Manhattan, marked by many dozen paper lanterns, built around bamboo lattice substructures and lit from within. The lanterns were all part of a collective “Imagined City” and ranged from familiar architectural structures to ziggurat-like shapes, from jellyfish to forms resembling a hot air balloon. I would love to see how other towns and cities interpret their imagined environment, and see more light art in general, and hope this procession of paper lanterns becomes an annual tradition in NYC.
