Over on CRAFT, sister Natalie posted this nifty announcement about CRAFT/MAKE contributor Rachel Hobson:
We are extra excited over the recent announcement of the Etsy and NASA Space Craft Contest winners because our own crafty space geek Rachel Hobson won in the 2D Original category for her High Texture Hand Embroidery of the Moon. Rachel’s handmade piece will be going into space for the next shuttle launch! I still remember when Rachel was working on it and took it out of her little lunch box to show me the detail work she was doing. It wasn’t completely done at the time but I just remember being completely amazed at how she created such depth and shape through simple embroidery floss.
From Universe Today:
Rachel said she was inspired to capture the gorgeous textures and geologic attributes of the Moon in hand embroidery, as “the moon has always served as artistic and scientific inspiration for humankind. It’s easily recognizable, and is a comforting, welcome sight in our sky. Its violently beautiful craters remind us what an active place our solar system is. When I observe the Moon through my telescope, I literally get weak in the knees.”
Congrats to our dear friend and colleague Rachel! We are so proud of you!
The Grand Prize Winner and Best of Show is the Northstar Table by Colleen and Eric Whiteley who will receive a $500 Etsy shopping spree and an all-expenses-paid trip with a guest to attend the shuttle launch at Kennedy Space Center in Florida as NASA’s VIP guests.
