The gamelan is a traditional Indonesian instrument. This concoction, however, is not just a gamelan. The Gamelatron is a mix of traditional instruments and modern day robotics. Typically, the percussion instruments are played by a group of people. This robotic ensemble creates intense and enveloping crescendos and soothing trickles of notes that sound like they’re materializing out of the air around you, without a human’s intervention.
[youtube https://youtu.be/ryFZ_KW0XhA]It is really hard to convey in video just how intense the sensation is. You can feel the vibrations in your bones as you lounge on a bean bag.
Pinpointing the direction that any given tone is coming from is nearly impossible, allowing you to just relax and take it all in.
In the craziness of Maker Faire, the Gamelatron is a welcomed respite from the noise, though it may technically even be louder than the other displays nearby.
You can find out more about the Gamelatron and its creator, Aaron Kuffner, on his website.
