How-To: Make a Candy Dot Portrait

A fundamental part of the selfie taking process is deciding how to manipulate the image before sharing it with the rest of the world. For artist Nathan Sharratt, this process may happen to include converting an image of himself to a halftone pattern and recreating it in candy dots, and now you can too with the fantastic tutorial he made about the process of making a self-portrait called Bathroom Selfie In Sugar And Spice And Also Ants.

This project came about somewhat serendipitously, when my sisters gave me a Make-Your-Own-Candy-Dots kit as a present. It reminded me of being a kid and how much I liked those little candy buttons even though they always seemed to get paper stuck in your teeth. It also just happened to look a lot like the halftone art I had been making, and I just happened to have an art exhibition scheduled at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center that would be the perfect opportunity to try out this new technique.

The tutorial includes a thorough description of how to first convert your image into a halftone pattern that can be rendered in candy dots before getting into making the candy dots recipe and recreating the image with them.

If you’d like to hear more about Sharratt’s project and the conceptual thought behind it, you can listen to an interview he did with Atlanta’s NPR station about this work and his exhibition at The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center called In Translation.
