Machines do everything nowadays, so it’s no surprise machines make our food, too. And while many delicious pastries and desserts are handmade by a skilled baker, Viennetta is made by machine.

Viennetta is an ice cream product comprised of layers of vanilla ice cream, topped by layers of compound chocolate. It is well known for its scrunched, wave-like layers of ice cream that sit at the top of the creation – something that wouldn’t be possible without machines.

In a recent video released on Facebook, it was revealed how Viennetta is made at the source. Layers of ice cream and chocolate are expelled from a machine onto a conveyer belt, where each cake grows taller and taller as new layers of ice cream and chocolate are added.

The layers of ice cream are expelled at various rates, and the infamous ripple-like ice cream topper comes together when an expeller shoots ice cream out at a rate much faster than the conveyer belt. The result is the signature look and feel of yummy Viennetta.

The ice cream product now comes in many different flavors, including pistachio, pineapple, chocolate, and mint. Unilever, the world’s largest ice cream manufacturer, produces it and sells it under the Heartbrand logo brands, including Good Humor and Glidat Strauss.

While Viennetta is a popular dessert choice at fast food chains like KFC and Pizza Hut, most of us still purchase our baked goods and ice cream cakes from our friendly, neighborhood bakers. Still, the delicious ice cream cake could very well be the exception to the rule.
