Soon, I’ll be hopping on a plane and heading to Orlando, Florida for the 5th annual Maker Faire Orlando! I’m so excited about this event. I’ve heard so many good things from friends, but this will be my first year attending.
I’ve talked a bit with the organizers of the event and they’re really pumped because they’ve made a few changes this year that they think everyone will love.
New venue
They’ve moved to the Central Florida Fairgrounds, which means more space! Things were getting a bit tight before, now they can spread out and continue to grow.
Cost savings
Not only are ticket prices cheaper this year, but they have free parking too! Not to mention that when you buy a ticket you’re entered into a drawing to win a 3D printer.
Lofty goals
One big push this year is to get more people to have hands-on experiences at the Maker Faire. They’re hoping to teach 1500 people to solder and have 1000 people make t-shirts.
Here are a few of the items that I’m particularly excited to see, though as always, I’ll find more when I get there!
3D Potter
I really enjoy 3D printing, but when you can get a non-standard material in there as well, it takes things over the top. I can’t wait to see some ceramics printing from 3D Potter
Menagerie In Motion
Bike powered mini parade floats? Oh my goodness, this sounds and looks like a ridiculous amount of fun.
Sculpturings
Rebecca Rose’s Sculpturings are pretty awesome as is, but she’s bringing a series that are “holographic”. It looks like she’s using a simple hologram system to display some cool sculpturings.
The E.T. Experience
Hop on a Kuwahara BMX bike (the same as Elliot rode in E.T.) and don an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset to experience the iconic bike flight from Elliot’s perspective!
While I’m there I plan on doing a live blog, where I update throughout the weekend with pictures and captions from the event. If you see me there, be sure to come up and say hello! Maybe we can take a picture and you’ll get in the blog.
