At Maker Faire Bay Area 2013, Sketchup Product Evangelist Aidan Chopra taught an engaged crowd about how to use his product.
He first explained that what makes Sketchup unique is that it builds 3D object from a 2D perspective. Edges and faces are laid out and manipulated by pushing and pulling them into 3D objects. The colored X, Y, and Z axes also give the user perspective and grounding the 3D environment. This differs from other 3d modelling software that combines primitives (simple shapes like cubes, spheres, and toruses) to make their creations.
Aidan first deftly gave a quick overview of the software itself, and then turned to an elaborate Adirondack chair on stage with him. He quickly pulled up the file of the Adirondack chair and taught the audience how it was built. This instruction by example was engaging and left the audience coming away with some valuable tools.
As a side note, as long as objects in Sketchup are “watertight,” they can be 3D printed.
