Hardware Innovation Workshop: A Video Retrospective

Before this week’s Open Hardware Summit gets underway tomorrow in New York City, we thought, as a warm-up, we’d highlight some of the great presentations from MAKE’s Hardware Innovation Workshop, held in Palo Alto back in May. Like OHS, the HIW featured innovators and small-business people who are creating an open source future.

There were 30 speakers in all, Here are some of the stand-out presentations.

Nick Pinkston is the Founder of CloudFab the world’s first manufacturing-as-a-service API providing 3D printing, short-run injection molding, and mass customization interfaces. He also founded HackPittsurgh, a collective workshop, as a hub for makers. He also organizes the San Francisco Hardware Startup Meetup, Hardware Startup Unconference and is a mentor for the Thiel “20 Under 20” Fellowship.

Tim O’Reilly is founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media Inc., MAKE’s parent company. In this presentation he discusses the roots of the maker movement, MAKE, and how open source influenced both.

Limor Fried is an MIT-trained engineer and the founder of Adafruit Industries. She was the first female engineer to appear on the cover of WIRED magazine and was named one of the “most influential women in technology” by Fast Company and the winner of an EFF pioneer award for teaching and sharing electronics.

She’s joined in this talk by Phillip Torrone, MAKE’s Editor-at-Large and creative director at Adafruit Industries. He has authored and contributed to numerous books on programming, mobile devices, design, hardware hacking and is also a contributing editor for Popular Science.
