Welcome to the weird world of Maker Faire, a giant melting pot of science geeks, do-it-yourselfers and entrepreneurs. Since the event launched in San Mateo, Calif. in 2006, it has attracted a growing number of innovators seeking to catalyze their startup businesses… “They see small ways to change the world or change their lives,” says Dale Dougherty, publisher of Make magazine, which hosts the Faire. “They might make a million dollars, but that’s not their life’s goal.”
