The 2nd trailer for the upcoming film The Martian was released today and we’re going nuts in the Make: offices. If you’re just now hearing about this movie, you’re probably wondering why Make: is so excited about a simple movie trailer. Well, imagine an action movie but instead of our hero doing amazing stunts, they’re pulling off amazing feats of making!

This XKCD comic nails the general outline of the movie pretty well:

The move, based off the book of the same title by Andy Weir, is a nonstop roller coaster of life and death situations where the only solution is quick thinking and creative making. It is as though this story was tailor made for us and we can’t wait to see the movie.

As someone who has read the book multiple times, I’m happy that Matt Damon is capturing the attitude and somewhat dry humor of the main character of the story, Mark Watney. Lets hope that the movie delivers on the big promises we see from the trailers!

Warning: plot spoilers ahead. I wouldn’t worry too much about spoilers though. This isn’t a movie with a big twist or secrets revealed. This is a movie about creative thinking and survival based on science prowess. We’ll see science at work and get to soak in beautiful red-tinted martian vistas.

Take a preview of Mark Watney, the stranded astronaut, breaking out some serious science:

Here’s the plot description from the trailer

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presuremed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.
