TerraCycle Inspires with Their Upcycled Offices

Our friends at TerraCycle are on a mission to reduce waste on our planet through upcycling and recycling pre- and post-consumer waste. From their site: “TerraCycle currently engages more than 20 million people at 90,000 locations in over 20 countries, to collect non-recyclable waste. TerraCycle then turns the collected waste into a wide variety of products and materials. Collection locations include schools, offices, community groups and a wide variety of other organizations as well as homes.”

A few months ago, MAKE community member and TerraCycle’s “Chief Design Junkie” Tiffany Threadgould visited us at MAKE headquarters and loved how much fun our atmosphere is (toys everywhere!). She then told us about how each of TerraCycle’s seven international offices were designed using only upcycled or reused materials. Way to walk the walk, TerraCycle! Inspirational ideas abound as we take a virtual tour of their offices and look at what types of materials are used to replace the usual office wares.

US Office

We’ll start with TerraCycle headquarters, based in Trenton, N.J. At the top of this post is the TerraCycle logo, made completely from drink pouches, which greets visitors upon entry. Above, we see the lobby, carpeted in reclaimed astroturf, with walls made of salvaged wood and room dividers made of soda bottles. Check out more shots below.

The Argentina office, located in Buenos Aires, has a heavy emphasis on local artwork adorning the walls. Note the shelves full of upcycled products, zipper bags made of drink pouches.

I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.
