On the last Food Makers episode of the year, I’ll be chatting with author, farmer, and grassfed beef rancher Shannon Hayes about her new book Long Way on a Little, a decidedly pro-meat cookbook and overall guide to healthy, thrifty, and self-sufficient living. Tune in on Google+ at 2pm PST and 5pm EST right here.

In addition to lots of dollar-stretching recipes, there are also some great recipes for soap, lip balm, skin salve, and other home brew body care products. Lowly beef tallow is the master ingredient.

Shannon runs lives on a 160-acre farm in upstate New York with her family where she farms and writes books about clean living. I loved her previous book Radical Homemakers, a thoughtful study on how to become less of a consumer and reclaim the domestic arts. Long Way on a Little is written in the same, well-informed vein. In true DIY spirit, she’s also created her own publishing company–Left to Write Press.
