  Hi Matt,
  
  Regarding the spider rifle, I don't know enough about the physics, but how "compressed" does the air have to be, to be effective? Is there anyway you know of to hand-pump some canister to recharge it? It would be nice to have a spider rifle that doesn't require a $5 expenditure on compressed air every time you run out.

  I don't know of any hand pump that would generate enough air movement to achieve the suction that compressed air does. One option may be to use some form of fan based unit with rechargeable batteries to force air through the tube. Of course you may also be able to create a canister which you could connect to an air compressor that could accomplish the same affect. Just a few possibilities.

  I just built one of these with my son. It was a lot of fun but it is only mildly effective. I was able to suck up a tiny ant, but it lacks enough suction for the real nasties that we are after.
  
  Anyone have suggestions for turbo-charging this thing?

  Looking at your Flikr photos I would make sure that the tube where the bugs are forced into is shorter. You need to have good air flow out the bottom of that tube. The shorter the better.
