I’m here at the MAKE magazine booth at Maker Faire Detroit, and across from us is the Learn to Solder area, run and manned by Mitch Altman and Jimmie Rodgers. Mitch has brought tears to my eyes with his passion and enthusiasm for teaching folks to solder. I’ve witnessed him patiently and joyfully teaching people from 5 to 85 years old. He was even spotted teaching Henry Ford. Mitch and Jimmie’s enthusiasm is contagious and inspiring. Teach what you know and love, and make the world a better place.

Nice post, Goli. Thanks.
Funny, I had the exact same experience, and similar thoughts, at HOPE. The MAKE table was right across from Noisebridge in the Hackerspace Village and I saw Mitch (and Jimmie) tirelessly teaching people and answering questions. At one point, I remember thinking about what an astounding human being Mitch was and how honored I was to know him.
I also thought about the fact that he’s ubiquitous and has done so much for the hackerspace movement. He’s sort of Johnny Hacker Seed, going around and helping to start or to inspire burgeoning hackerspaces around the world. What a guy. AND he does it all in rainbow hair!
Ditto. I met Mitch and Jimmie at Quahogcon, and was similarly impressed with their dedication and enthusiasm to teaching.
