The video below is a lengthy but insightful interview with legendary Italian maker Enzo Mari. His 1974 manual Autoprogettazione offered nineteen designs using readymade cuts of timber, to build tables, chairs, bookshelves, and even beds. He essentially open-sourced the home furnishings industry. His designs usually required nothing more than a hammer and nails. You can see more of his builds here.
For those of you near New York City our friends at Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, Queens, will be running a series of Design/Build workshops for adults from May 19-June 30. Participants will be building home furnishings inspired by the Autoprogettazione approach of Enzo Mari. The workshops are part of their upcoming do it (outside) exhibition.

Love the aesthetic of his designs — so timeless and classy! And hearing his thoughts on form is thought-provoking.
This was very inspiring. I love simple logical designs like this. So inspired I purchased the book and am now in the midst of making my first of his bookshelf designs.
