The final product.  Beautifully painted and ready for heads to incline!

Mark Leonard, who works for Aztec design, is no stranger to intricate and unique projects. After being inspired by a Youtube video, he decided that he had to have a 3D printer. If he was thinking it would expand his creative abilities, it seems he was definitely right.

This ceiling art, as you might expect, is a culmination of a lot of work, addition of several more printers after the first one, and many, many reels of plastic. Mark actually did not know how to 3D model before buying his printer, a Makerfarm Prusa i3, and learned his skills through watching Youtube.

He’s documented his journey from getting the printer box, to the ceiling masterpiece, in a giant imgur gallery of over 250 pictures. Naturally, there were many smaller projects between unboxing and the final result, including a Predator head, Mustang logo, gears, a chess piece, and other smaller ceiling decorations. He also documents some epic failures; printing still isn’t quite a matter of just pushing a button yet.

Not that there weren't any mistakes along the way...

It’s definitely worth taking a look at this project for inspiration, especially if you’re debating the merits of buying your own printer (or two). Maybe you can use one to “revolutionize” your business or hobby art capabilities!

I was thinking of 3d printing GLaDOS and hanging her from my ceiling, but this is very cool too.
I had a misprint that would scare anyone!!!!
Oddly it started printing almost normal near the end of the print.
Most of the print looks like very thin and very random plastic string.
I think I had the belts too tight.
This 3d ceiling art is a masterpiece!!!!!!
Such a beautiful work of art.
    Very well done.
I wonder if a color 3d printer could have printed one of these and look this good?
    Amazing work!!!!!
